Classes will take place at the Victoria Conference Centre at 720 Douglas Street on Friday, November 15 and Saturday, November 16, 2019.

Arabella Allure

Getting the word out about yourself and your shows is essential to building your profile, fan base and opportunities to perform. This class covers how to write a press release, craft a press kit and resources to use. Workshop cost $20.00

About Arabella:
Burlesque entertainer Arabella Allure is co-founder and former President of the Edmonton Burlesque Festival, she has also worked with the Vancouver Burlesque Festival And Burlesque Hall of Fame in Las Vegas. Arabella has a business marketing degree and pursues performance movement and theory classes to continually refine her skills.

Creating a Bit
Vixen Valentine

Want to tap into your funny bone? Strengthen your comedic skills? Try and understand where to start in comedy? This class will break down how to create a bit by examining terms used in writing comedy sketches and the world of the lazzi. From buttons to turns to physicality we’ll examine how to write a bit and then put the bit up onto its feet to turn it into a full fledged burlesque lazzi. Come ready to play!

About Vixen:
Vixen Valentine holds an M.F.A. in Physical Theatre from Accademia dell’Arte in Arezzo, Italy and a B.A. in Drama from the University of Washington. She’s studied commedia dell’arte, clown, Roy Hart Technique, Laban, fan manipulation/juggling and partner acrobatics (Flic Circus school), mask theatre with Familie Flöz in Berlin, Germany, and did an intensive study with Divadlo Continuo that culminated in a final devised physical theatre performance that toured Czech Republic and Slovakia. Vixen has been a burlesque performer for 9+ years and is currently the Artistic Director of WhatNot Theatrics & Director of Media for BurlyCon.

This class will ignite you at your core, and inspire you to rise into your greatest potential, on and off stage. An initiator of ancient activations, Devaiya Ra is an effervescent burlesque prayerformance artist from Victoria. Through Burlesque, Drag, and Ceremonial art, this evolving artist welcomes you to discover your Soul Seduction. Through tantric teasing, and soulful delight, Devaiya Ra has traveled across the Westcoast, and internationally, bringing his unique style of Burlesque and Prayerformance as far as Egypt. Put Your Face On: A practical tutorial for glamorous stage-makeup
The Luminous Pariah

Drawing from years of experience along with countless sessions with drag queens, divas, and cirque folk, Luminous relays the basics (and not-so-basics) of heightening or altering your face for the stage.

This class is useful for anyone who wants to up the drama-factor of their current look, create a new look, or simply learn how to look fabulous.
*This is a hands-on workshop, so please bring makeup to follow along with Lumi.*

About Luminous:
The Luminous Pariah, Seattle-based interdisciplinary cabaret performance artist! He tours extensively and has performed in over 100 international productions throughout Europe, Canada, and Australia. Luminous performs as a soloist as well as one-fourth of acclaimed boylesque collective Mod Carousel. Combining vivid costumes, unbridled strength, and dazzling elegance in an exciting amalgam that will unhinge your jaw!

Choreography in 5, 6, 7, 8!
Ruthe Ordare

So, you found the perfect song! You can see it now: the costume, the moves, the reveals! Time to get to work…but where to start?! Choreography can be intimidating but it doesn’t have to be!

Ruthe Ordare will teach you her step-by-step approach to breaking down your music to create a foundation for building choreography. She will also discuss choreography dynamics, the role of improv and reviewing your creation.

What previous students have said: “…It was the foundation I needed but didn’t know I was missing.” and “It made the idea of beginning to choreograph a number much less daunting.”

In her international travels, Ruthe has been awarded “Best Solo” at the Texas Burlesque Festival and “Best Duo” at the Oregon Burlesque Festival. Sparkle Plenty

Whether your number is saucy, scandalous or silly, you gotta sell us what you’re feeling!

This one hour movement-based workshop will explore different ways you can characterize your choreography by learning tips and tricks to let your mood make you move.

Sparkle Plenty will guide you through various character exercises and help you apply them to simple choreography to show you how changing your facial expression can make a big impact. You will have all the tools you need to serve some serious face to your audience after this class!

About Sparkle:
Sparkle Plenty is Vancouver’s glamedian, weirdlesquer and word-maker-upper who has been delivering beautifully bizarre burlesque acts for over 10 years! This fiery goddess is Cree with mixed heritage and is a proud sister of the first-ever all Indigenous burlesque group, Virago Nation.

You can find her teasing and emceeing with the Screaming Chicken Theatrical Society as well as on stages all over Vancouver, Toronto, Las Vegas and more. Sparkle has been invited as a feature performer in burlesque festivals in Vancouver, Calgary, and Edmonton as well as queer and Indigenous arts festivals throughout the city.

Indigenizing Burlesque Workshop

60+ min (session may run up to 90 minutes

An intimate, closed-door round table for Indigenous (First Nations, Metis, Inuit and International Indigenous) performers. FREE and participants must identify as a member of this community to attend.

In a round table discussion, Ruthe will guide participants in conversations about topics such as: decolonizing burlesque, reclaiming Indigenous sexuality, confronting stereotypes, cultural appropriation, performance as ceremony, community building and self-love as a daily practice.

A class for the over-thinker! As performance artists our body is our medium, and yet we spend so much time and energy disconnecting from the vital messages your body is giving us. This class is designed to bring your consciousness out of your head and into your breath, your muscles, your heart, and your movement. We’ll utilize exercises to let go of the unattainable expectations we have on our bodies and explore the ways in which our bodies *want* to move.

Ruby Slickeur

“Who The What Am I?” explores the importance and multiple applications of character work and intention in burlesque performance.

This workshop is for anyone who enjoys creating narrative based work, wants help developing their burlesque persona, or is seeking some extra oomph to help them sail across the stage.

Part discussion, part movement, this workshop includes brainstorming exercises, theatre and dance based exploration of the body, and last but not least, playing with Ruby’s puppet collection!

About Ruby:
With a love for pussy, pop culture, and all things pink, Ruby Slickeur bring plenty of fierce femme and campy character to the stage. The Silliest Slut North of Sixty has performed from the sub-arctic to Las Vegas, and spent five years involved with the Vancouver burlesque & drag scenes before taking the Northwest Territories by storm. They’re the Artistic Director of Northern performance company Parkas & Pasties.

The Art of Eye Fuckery
Judith Stein

Eye Fuckery… learn techniques for connecting with your audience through a series of exercises to create truthful, fun, and authentic connections. Learn to bring your burlesque personal and the essence of the real you to the stage, while giving and receiving delight from your audience.

Canadian Burlesque Legend, The Lady Divine, Ms. Judith Stein aka The Grand Beaver, Mama Beaver

Judith Stein got her start as a go-go dancer in Eugene Oregon, and quickly developed her own unique combination of elegant and comedic striptease that took her to the far corners of the world to perform. Recognized by both the Burlesque Hall of Fame in Las Vegas, and the Canadian Burlesque Hall of Fame, Judith is Canada’s official Burlesque Legend and calls Nelson, BC home. Her dynamic performances and cheeky wit have made her a beloved feature attraction at burlesque festivals and shows all over North America, Finland, and New Zealand!

Kitty Kin-Evil

Pick up some skills your body will thank you for. We literally stretch from head to toes!!!!

You will learn proper muscles stretching techniques and develop skills that will help you achieve some staple moves with burlesque performance such as back bends and splits.

This class is great for performers and everyday life.

You will learn the importance flexibility has in everyday life, aging, health, adding to your skills as a performer.

About Kitty:
Kitty Kin-Evil is the headmistress of Ottawa Burlesque Academy. She was a former personal trainer before diving into the glitter world. She is also an aerialist.

Every Party Needs a Clown: Clowning for Burlesque
Holly Von Sinn

In this class we will go through basic clown exercises with the goal of becoming more grounded, present and creative in the moment. We will also devolve skills for creating and maintaining a clear character on stage.

About Holly:
Holly is multi disciplinary performer, teacher, mentor, performer and producer. With training in clown, improve, stage craft and makeup artistry Holly has devoted the last ten years to burlesque, co-founding EBF and performing and taught all over Europe and North America including headlining Burlesque and Beyond in Philadelphia.
